Penned in February of 1833 at the Concord Academy, the essay was written by a schoolmate of Henry David Thoreau, while the latter attended the school from 1828 until 1833. It poignantly began: All men are bound by a strong attachment to the place where they received their birth and education..It is common to all to the slave as well as the freeman, though perhaps in a less degree to the former, to have an ardent attachment to their native hills and valleys."It went on to declare: "..his actions (the patriot) may reach the ears of people bound down in slavery and prompt them to make an effort for liberty and to regain long lost rights, to drive their tyrants from the throne which they have so long held and from which they have sent forth the chains that bind the necks of the people with grievious and insupportable burdens, to establish a good government and free institutions and enjoy that freedom which is the natural right of man.
