Title: Fit for a King" Together with "King Cleans His Own Rifle
Description: S. l. (New York), Associated Press and United Press International, 1958. First Edition. Two wirephotos, 1958 and 1959, b & w; 9 x 7 and 8 x 8 1/4; typed paper tags, agency ink stamps, and production marks on verso; a few manuscript corrections to image on the second photo, a slight ripple to top margin, and bottom edge cut unevenly; overall in very good condition. Simeon Borisov von Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1937 - ) is the last reigning King of Bulgaria, from 1943 to 1946, and Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2001 to 2005. He is one of only two heads of state alive, from the time of the Second World War, and one of only two former monarchs to become Head of Government through democratic elections later in life. With the Red Army entering Bulgaria, the regents of the boy-king, the heads of the army, and the members of the previous government were executed by the Communists, a referendum was held in the presence of the Soviet Army, Simeon was deposed, and in September 1946 the royal family was exiled from Bulgaria and granted asylum in Spain. In 1958, Simeon enrolled at the US Valley Forge Military Academy and College and graduated as a second leutenant. The current photos were taken during that time, showing him, in the first image, polishing his combat boots and in the second one - together with a fellow cadet - ministering to their rifles. Very good .
