Title: A Collection of Lucite, Nursery-Rhymes Tiles
Description: S. l. J. V. Barnes, 1948. Forty-three square, lucite tiles in pink, several shades of blue, yellow, orange, several shades of green, white, and beige, for a total of 11 designs and variations of each other; 4 1/4 x 4 1/4; illustrations and text stamped in contrasting ink; many with manufacturer's name and date to lower right corner; a few with small holes to upper margin (for hanging); most with minor scratches and wear, a few with smudges to edges and to a few of the letters; in very good or better condition. Produced by an elusive manufacturer, the tiles were most probably designed to be displayed in classrooms or children's playrooms, to teach kids the words of popular nursery rhymes. Most featured an open-ended part of a verse, e.g. "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great.." and a few just contained an entertaining illustration and a title with historiated letters, for example: "The Goose Book," with anthropomorphic eggs for the letter "O."
