The founding of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad Company was a result of the urgent need to move vast quantities of coal from the coalfields of Pennsylvania to Rochester, Buffalo, and the smaller towns in western New York State. A forerunner of the BR&P was the Rochester and State Line Railroad, whose construction according to an amusing anecdote came to be in 1869, after one night during a business dinner, Mumford merchant and manufacturer Oliver Allen yelled: "Let's build a railroad!" It was completed in 1878 to a great promise and enthusiasm and by 1879, most of the stock of the company was owned by the Vanderbilt family. Alas, it was not financially sound, the Vanderbilts quickly lost interest, it was shut down in 1880 and sold to a New York syndicate. From its remains, the Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad was created, which also went bancrupt in just 4 years. The latter was split into two parts and thus the Pittsburgh and State Line Railroad on the one hand and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad Company on the other hand were established in 1885. The latter would be one of the more successful ventures in the area for 47 years, when it would be absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Good .
