First edition; 9 x 6; pp. [5], vi-xi, [2], 2-404, [1], 2-32; red cloth over boards, ruled and printed in gilt and black; light wear to corners and tips of spine; a small spot to front board; remnants from a removed bookplate to front board verso; a few spots of foxing, mostly to fore-edge and first and last few leaves; overall in very good condition. John Mortimer Murphy (1845 - 1898) was a British hunter and freelance writer, who traveled extensively throughout the North American West in the pre-railroad era, when most of the inhabitants of the area were wild beasts and Native Americans. His current book was an ambitious attempt at describing all the game animals found west of the Mississippi. It described his real-life adventures through California, Oregon, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and the Washington Territory and included chapters on the grizzly bear, the cougar, the buffalo, the gray woulf, etc. Very good .
