Title: A Collection of Snap Paper Popper Design Samples
Description: Lexington, KY, Sportswood Spec Co. 1950. First Edition. Eleven samples, n. d. (ca 1950); approx. 8 x 4 1/2; thin, die-cut paper stock, text and illustrations to recto only; held together by a single staple to left margin; a light spot to bottom of first one and a small nick to edge of last one, else very minor wear; very good to near fine condition. In the early 1950s, the Sportswood Spec Co. produced a series of cardboard, advertising toys, shaped like a gun, which made a snapping noise, when the toy was whipped through the air. The pop came from an illustrated piece of paper (the advertising part of the toy), attached to the underside, which briskly unfolded with the motion. Big companies and businesses, including Coca-Cola, and shows and performances used them to promote their fares. The current samples presented various designs and images for the above-mentioned paper piece. The illustrations included baseball and football players, Santa Claus, Presidents, Animals, and more. Very good .
