First edition; 5 3/4 x 4 3/4; pp. [1], 4-80; light-brown wraps, printed and rled in black; small chips to corners; thin splits and loss of paper to tips of spine, else wraps and pages bright and clean; illustrated with numerous woodcuts; very good- condition. Also included is a tipped-in leaflet by the author, titled "Moisture Gauge." J. L. Campbell (1846 - ?) began his career in the early 1870s building coal barges. He started pattenting and manufacturing incubators in 1878 and rapidly became one of the leading names in the business. He also made bread-raisers (described in the catalog, as well). His current, 9th, catalog included descriptions, plans, specifications, prices, illustrations, advice for the buyers, testimonials, etc. Interestingly enough, the front wrap featured the following text: "Owing to the large number of catalogues that we have to send to those who do not buy, we are compelled to charge for them. Keep the book clean, and if you think it is not worth the price, return it, and we will gladly return you the five cents." . Very good .
