Description: Baltimore, MD, Guggenheimer, Weil & Co. Prs. 1891. First Edition. Small broadside; 9 1/4 x 6; thin beige stock printed in black; two faint, horizontal crease lines; small puncture with loss of paper to right margin; overall in very good condition. An advertisement broadside for a land auction, it was published at the height of of the 19th-century emigration to West Virginia. When it became a state in 1863, it was sparcely settled, but with the rapid growth of the coal-mining industry, the white labor hands from the immediate vicinity, exclusively employed in the mines, became insufficent and the companies had to start bringing men from other communities, states, and even foreign countries. The broadside touted the Charles-town as "The Gateway of the Shenandoah Valley and the Threshold of the New South." It bragged about cheap fuel, cheap homes, cheap living, and cheap transportation. It also proclaimed: "Insure the Growth of Charles-town into a Great Manufacturing City. Come and Invest. Very good .
