Title: Polovaia Psikhopatiia, S Obrashcheniem Osobago Vnimaniia Na Izvrashchenie Polovogo Chuvstva (Sexual Psychopathy, with Special Attention to the Perversion of the Sexual Drive)
Description: S.-Peterburg (St. Petersburg): Izdanie zhurnala "Prakticheskaia Meditsina, 1909. Hardcover. Translated from the 13th, expanded, German edition; 9 1/2 x 6 1/4; pp. [3], IV-VIII, [1], 2-430; rebound in textured blue cloth over boards; a few unobtrusive, light spots to cloth; minor staining to inner margin of first few leaves only; very good condition. An early-20th century Russian edition of Austro-German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing's (1840 - 1902) foundational work "Psychopatia Sexualis," intended as a forensic reference source for psychiatrists, physicians, and judicial figures. First published in German in 1886, the book was quickly translated into Russian and several editions were printed between 1887 and 1919. Allegedly, it became very popular in Russia and of the utmost interest in it was the large number of "confessional" letters sent to the author by "sexual psychopaths," which he included in the book. Among other things in his work, Krafft-Ebing coined and popularized the terms sadism, masochism, and anilingus. According to him, sex was for procreation only and any form of sexual encounter for pleasure was a perversion of the sex drive. On the subject of homosexuality, his theory was that it originated in the gestational age of the fetus, which eventually resulted in a "sexual inversion" of the brain. Ill.: 0. 2.
