First edition; removed, but including half-title page, as published; 8 x 5 1/4; pp. [1], 6-33; laid paper, printed in black and tied with two decorative strings; a few minor spots to margins and a small puncture to lower corner of first leaf; woodcut borders to half-title page and beginning of text; very faint, embossed stamp to half-title page; very good condition. A small note by Reverend Nathaniel Huntting to title page: "Nathl Huntting / Ex dono Authoris / June 1747."Benjamin Colman (1673 - 1747) was a Harvard graduate and one of the most prominent religious figures of his generation. He would become Pastor of the Brattle Street Church in 1699 and would continue for 48 years, until his death. Colman was an avid proponent of reforming the Congregational Church. He also known to have coordinated many missionary trips among the Native Americans. His current sermon was delivered at the ordination of Samuel Cooper (1725 - 1783) - a Congregational minister, co-founder of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and pastor of the Brattle Street Church after the death of Benjamin Colman - from 1747 until 1783. The original owner of the pamphlet, given to him by the author, was Reverend Nathaniel Huntting (1675 - 1753), Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of East Hampton, Long Island. Ill.: 0. 2.
