Description: Various, 1959. Softcover. Ten large menus from S.S. Mariposa, S.S. Monterey, and S.S. Lurline, a wine list (pp. 10), and a crew menu (pp. 10, recto only); various dates, 1959 - 1974; various sizes, 12 x 9 and smaller; seven of the menus illustrated from watercolors by Louis Macouillard; two others with decorative, silk ropes and tassels to spine. The crew menu consists of typed, mimeographed loose sheets; folded, with a few minor spots to margins. Overall the group is in very good to near fine condition, with a few minor nicks and creases to edges. The Matson Navigation Company's maiden voyage to Hawaii began in 1882, with Captain William Matson sailing the schooner Emma Claudina from San Francisco to Hilo, Hawaii, loaded with food and general merchandise. By 1932, Matson's so called "white ships," the luxury liners Mariposa, Monterey and Lurline, were constructed and they would become instrumental in the development of tourism in Hawaii. Matson would become known for commissioning famous photographers and artists to create beautiful keepsake menus for the voyages. One such artist was Louis Macouillard - a San Francisco Bay Area native - who would be Matson's last "menu-man" to decorate the menus. The wine list in the group also featured cocktails, mixed drinks, premium brand alcohol, and soft drinks. The crew menu included choice meat dishes, a variety of sides, hot breakfast plates, and different desserts. Ill.: 0. 2.
