Prince Grigory Gagarin (1810 - 1893) was a Russian artist, diplomat, and Major General. After studying under the great Karl Briullov, Gagarin became friends with Pushkin and Lermontov and illustrated several of the former's books. During the Caucasian War, he took part in the military operations and continued painting, at the same time. He would become the Vice President of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1859. His current work, published posthumously, illustrated people, landmarks, and everyday happenings in the Caucasus. Ill.: 0. 2.
