First edition; 6 1/2 x 4 3/4; pp. [4], 7-31; beige wraps, printed and illustrated in black and brown; nicks to tips of spine with small loss of paper; hinges a bit wobbly; text typed and mimeographed; illustrated with a plate frontis; very good condition. Leonid Mosendz (1897 - 1948), pseudonyms Osyp Liaskovets and Rostyslav Berladnyk, was a Ukrainian author, translator, and educator. A demobilized Army of the Ukrainian National Republic soldier, he was arrested by the Poles in 1921 and spent time at the Kalisz internment camp. He worked as a chemist in Bratislava from 1939 until 1945, when he fled to the British occupational zone in Austria. In his literary career Mosendz contributed works to the influential journals "Vistnyk" and its predecessor "Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk" and wrote several books of poetry, literary criticism, and prose. His current narrative poem, from the German "Kann nicht verstehen" (Cannot understand), was written and published at a DP (displaced persons) camp in Innsbruck. He died of tuberculosis a few years later in Switzerland. Ill.: 0. 2.
