Viacheslav Ivanov (1866 – 1949) was a Russian Symbolist, playwright, poet, translator, and a protegee of poet Anna Akhmatova, although she would eventually disassociate herself from him and would bitterly criticize him and his poetry, after he tried to convince her to leave her husband Nikolai Gumilev. "Prometheus" was his second play, which was written in a distinctive Aeschylean style and interpreted the masterpiece of Greek mythology through Ivanov's philosophy of religious Symbolism and Neoplatonism.
