Ella Sterling Cummins - Mighels (1853 - 1934) was a prominent author, historian, and a California Pioneer. She wrote under the pen name Aurora Esmeralda, founded the California Literature Society in 1913, and was named the First Literary Historian of California in 1919 by the California State Legislature. Best known for her numerous books on the literary history of her beloved state, Ella also wrote on other topics, including her current work on the social conditions in San Francisco and the Carmen's Strike of 1907. The latter, also known as the San Francisco Streetcar Strike of 1907, was one of the most violent in a sting of similar ones between 1895 and 1929. Ignited by the Progressive Civic Reform Movement, the strike would begin on the so called Bloody Tuesday, when armed workers would take control of the entire streetcar system, and would ultimately result in 31 deaths and over 1000 grave injuries.
