Signed and inscribed by the author, Captain Burns' grandson Walter Francis Burns, on the front board verso. Captain Otway Burns (1775 - 1850) was an American privateer during the War of 1812, politician, and businessman. Accumulating considerable wealth with successful capturing of coastal traders and avoiding Men-of-war, Burns founded a shipbuilding business and would go on to build the first steamboat in North Carolina - the Prometheus - in 1818. He would also lead a long political career and serve a total of 11 terms - 7 in the House of Representatives and 4 as a North Carolina State Senator. The current book, written by the captain's grandson, followed the colorful history and exploits of Otway Burns. Ill.: 0. 2.
