Title: Korol, Dama, Valet (King, Queen, Knave)
Description: New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1969. Hardcover. Second Russian edition (first Russian edition published in the US); 8 1/2 x 6; pp. [6], vii-x, [2], 5-259, [5]; plain, black cloth over boards with gilt title; fuchsia top stain; very minor wear to tips of spine and corners; near fine condition. White DJ, printed in purple and black; a few minor nicks to edges; very light, general wear; very good to near fine condition. "King, Queen, Knave" was written in 1928, in Russian, and published the same year by Slovo in Berlin, under the pseudonym V. Sirin, while Nabokov was living in Germany. It was not until 1968, when his son Dmitri translated and published the novel into English, with significant corrections and changes by the author. This second Russian edition, "First Edition in the United States of America," was released a year later. The plot revolved around Kurt Dreyer, a wealthy Berlin businessman, his wife, and a young relative of Dreyer's, who had come to work for Kurt, had an affair with the wife, and conspired with her to kill the husband. Being Nabokov's second novel, it was very favorably received and its success, in fact, helped Vladimir and Vera pay off all their debts. Ill.: 0. Very good 2.
