(ca 1880 [?]); single, card stock sheet, folded, pp. [4]; one large and 4 smaller swatches of silk affixed to paper; a table with sizes and prices to back wrap; a few small spots (not affecting fabric); very good condition. A sample booklet of beautiful, Chinese silk for scarves, imported by an unidentified company from Asia. After an epidemic of silkworm diseases hit the European silk industry in 1845, the price of cocoons increased. That, paired with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the shortage of silk in France, reduced the price of importing Asian silk and prompted companies to offer Chinese and Japanese fabrics to the fashion-conscious European ladies and gentlemen.
