A DP (displaced persons) camp publications, the books contained history and criticism of the Ukrainian literature of the "Ancient and Middle Ages" - from the oral tradition, through the early religious texts - and the "New Age" - beginning with Ivan Kotliarevskyi (1769 - 1838), considered the pioneer of modern Ukrainian literature, and ending with Mykola Kulish and the literary works of the 1920s. Volodymyr Radzykevych (1886 - 1966) was a Ukrainian writer, literary critic, and educator. Among his other works, he wrote several children's books under the pseudonym Vuiko Vlodko. He was also a great supporter and member of "Prosvita" (Enlightenment) - an organization, founded in the 19th century, for the preservation and development of the Ukrainian culture and as a counterbalance to the Russophile, anti-Ukrainian trends of the times.
