First edition thus; 6 1/2 x 4 3/4; pp. 124 of 126, lacking last leaf; beige and blue front wrap, lacking back wrap; chips and loss of paper to spine and lower right corner of front wrap; portrait frontis; good condition. Taras Shevchenko (1814 – 1861) - Ukrainian poet, writer, and artist, considered the forefather of modern Ukrainian literature and, by extension, the modern Ukrainian language - first wrote "Kobzar" (literally meaning "a bard, who not only sings but also plays a musical instrument) in 1840. He would be, eventually, nicknamed The Kobzar himself. The first publication contained only 8 poems. He published two more books, under the same name but greatly expanded with many more poems, in 1844 and 1860. The current DP (displaced persons) camp publication of his poetry was part of the "Ukrainska Kliasika" series. Ill.: 0. 2.
