(ca 1881); oblong 11 x 15; pp. 38, including text to wraps verso; illustrated yellow wraps; thin 2" cut to tail of spine; age-toning and some staining, mostly to margins and largely affecting only wraps and first and last several pages; creases to corners; illustrated with numerous, large, wood engravings; overall good to very good condition. An uncommon and quite beautiful catalog and price list of one of the premier Chicago companies of the second half of the 19th century. The John Wilkinson Co. was established by John Wilkinson in 1872, after his iron business - a partnership between himself and J. J. Parkhurst - was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The company was organized for the purpose of trading in sporting goods and supplies, including spectacular baseball, tennis, and bicycling uniforms, as well as tools and materials for wood-carving and scroll-sowing, some of which he was the first to introduce in the US. He also offered supplies for the amateur photographer and was known to had had one of the largest and best equipped private photography studios in the country. The catalog contains all manners of tools, illustrated with beautiful wood engravings, described, and priced, as well as several pages of "Hope's and Ware's Designs for Scroll Sawing." OCLC lists one copy at the Chicago History Museum, none other in the trade (as of January 2015). Ill.: 0. 2.
