Title: Derzhava I Revoliutsiia. Nauka Marksizmu Pro Derzhavu I Zavdania Proletariiatu V Revoliutsii (the State and Revolution. The Marxist Theory of the State and the Task of the Proletariat in the Revolution)
Description: Niu Iork (New York): Robitnika, 1919. Hardcover. First Ukrainian edition thus (though title page states "Vipusk I [Issue I], research has not reveal any subsequent volumes); 8 x 5 3/4; pp. 176; blue cloth over boards; elaborate gilt decorations and title; vignettes at beginning and end of chapters; three small punctures (insect damage [?]) along spine, else very minor wear; very good or better. Translated from Russian into Ukrainian by Pavlo Ladan. A beautiful, lavishly decorated, Ukrainian emigre edition of Lenin's "The State and Revolution," it was considered his most important political statement. Originally written in August and September of 1917, while Lenin was in hiding from the Provisional Government, the book was to be released under the pseudonym F. F. Ivanovskii for fear of the government destroying it, had they seen the real name of the author. Though, the book would not be published until 1918, when the need for a pseudonym was no longer necessary. It described the nature of the State as an instrument for class oppression. Following Marx's model after the Paris Commune (the Revolutionary, Socialist Government that ruled Paris from 18 March until 28 May 1871), Lenin taught that the task of the Revolution was to smash the State. His arguments would become a practical guide of Russia's working class, before and immediately after the October Revolution. Ill.: 0. 2.
