Tihomir Dordevic (1868-1944), considered to be one of the founding fathers of Serbian Ethnology and the very first Chair of Ethnology at the University of Belgrade, completed his 10-volume masterpiece between 1930 and 1934. Earlier, in 1923, Dordevic had published another work with an identical title as part of a series of "Zadruga" Publishing House. In his own words, the book was so well received he decided to compile a collection of all his major studies and articles - previously published in various journals and books - on the Serbian life and culture, the Romanis and their customs and social life, folklore, etc. He was elected a member of the Serbian Royal Academy in 1937.
