First edition; 6 1/2 x 9 3/4; pp. 374; olive green wraps printed in black; short nick to head of spine; a few small crease lines to corners; closed cut to lower corner of first free leaf; some pages unopened; illustrated with plates; overall very good. Iurii Danilov (1866-1937) was a Russian officer who rose to the rank of Infantry General and at the beginning of World War I was appointed deputy chief of staff to Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich Romanov - grandson of Nicholas I of Russia and Commander in Chief of the Russian armies on the main front in the first year of the war. He resigned after the Revolution, was briefly summoned back by the War Ministry to attend the Brest-Litovsk Peace Conference, and ultimately left Russia in 1920 and settled in France. There he wrote several books on World War I, taught at the French Military Academy, and was deeply involved with helping other Russian exiles. Following his escape from Russia aboard the British Battleship HMS Marlborough in 1919 after the Revolution, Grand Duke Nicholas and his wife settled in Choigny outside of Paris. He would ultimately become the center of an anti-Soviet monarchist resistance group, and would head the Russian All Military Union alongside general Pyotr Wrangel. Written from personal recollections and materials, Danilov's book was intended as a beautifully compiled biography of Grand Duke Nicholas as well as an exhaustive source on World War I, its campaigns, and the Eastern Front.
