Catharine Sedgwick (1789 – 1867) was best known for her novels in what was called "domestic fiction" genre. The female characters in her works were most often spirited nonconformists who did not bow to the stereotype of women's conduct and behavior of the times. In fact, she was one Edgar Allan Poe's favorite authors and he was known to had referred to her current book as the best novel written by an American female novelist.
