Title: Strange Stories of the Animal World. A Book of Curious Contributions to Natural History
Description: London, Griffith and Farran, 1866. Hardcover. First edition; 5 x 7 1/4; pp. [5], iv-xii, [1], 2-372, [2]; full polished calf ruled in gilt; five raised bands and lavish gilt decorations to spine; marbled page edges; illustrated with steel engravings; leather with some rubbing and cracking along spine; foxing mostly to first and last few pages, else clean; numerous steel engravings; penciled-in note of previous owner to first blank page; overall in about very good- condition. The book contains a curious hand-painted bookplate on front cover verso which, interestingly enough, is an unfinished copy of Prince Albert's bookplate. John Timbs (1801 - 1875) was a British antiquary and a prolific writer. He was also the editor of several journals and the founder of "Year-Book of Science and Art." Timbs, sometimes, wrote under the pseudonym Horace Welby. In the preface to his current book the author stated that he was presenting the wonders of the animal world without the exaggeration he claimed often "besets narratives of Natural History" as the bare facts were sufficiently wondrous of and in themselves.
