First edition; 6 x 9 1/4; pp. [22], 9-324, [16]; 1/2 morocco and cloth over boards; gilt title and decorations; small chip off head of spine; short cut to tail of spine; some rubbing to edges and corners; a few small spots to cloth; previous owner's signature to first free page and his small initials on lower margin of spine; internally clean; illustrated with charts and tables; overall very good. Captain Edmund McNevin was born in Ireland in 1832. He left for the US in 1847 on The Great Western - one of the very first steamers to cross the ocean. In 1852, he was in command of the Davenport, and for 18 years he sailed all over the world in command of different ships. McNevin moved to San Francisco in 1874 and opened his highly regarded Navigation School. He also wrote several authoritative nautical navigation works, the present one being one of his best. He was rumored to had had one of the finest collections of nautical books and instruments. Uncommon book with only two other copies in the trade. Ill.: 0. 2.
