First edition; 9 x 11 1/2; pp. 3-78, [2]; pictorial wraps; some rubbing and minor loss of paper to spine; small crease lines and a chip to corners; internally clean; illustrated with both color and b&w plates (some tipped-in); "Contents" and "Illustrations Index" pages in Russian and French; overall in about very good- condition. An uncommon survivor of one of the influential Soviet art journals published from 1937 (some sources list the first year of publication as 1933, but a subtitle in the current issue states 21 years in circulation) to 1990. Issue No. 7 for 1958 contains material on the life and works of Pavel Fedotov (1815 – 1852) - a Russian painter who gained quite a recognition but ended up persecuted by the government for his ties to the Petrashevsky Social-Democratic group and ultimately died in a psychiatric hospital, sisters Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazian, sculptor Boris Korolev, foremost painter of hostorical subjects Vasilii Surikov, etc. Ill.: 0. 2.
