Georii Kublitskii was a Russian author and ethnographer who traveled extensively, documenting lives and customs from around the world. In "Swords and Spike" he gave a first-hand account of Iraq in the 1950s during a time of great turmoil for the country. The anti-colonial movement and organized Communist activity began gathering speed in the years following WWII. There were even specific words describing the stages of rebellion during the crisis: Al-Wathba (The Leap) - "1948's mass urban rebellion against the old regime and the British," Al-Intifada (The Uprising) - "student protests of 1952 marked the mass movement's return to the streets," and Al-Thawra (The Outbreak) - the 1958 Revolution.
