The anti-colonial movement and organized Communist activity began gathering speed in the years following WWII. There were even specific words describing the stages of rebellion during the crisis: Al-Wathba (The Leap) - "1948's mass urban rebellion against the old regime and the British," Al-Intifada (The Uprising) - "student protests of 1952 marked the mass movement's return to the streets," and Al-Thawra (The Outbreak) - the 1958 Revolution.
