Description: Moscow: Fizkul'tura i Sport, 1960. First edition; 5 x 8; pp. [4], 7-222, [1] including text to last page; original pictorial wraps; few crease lines to back cover; minor rubbing to head and tail of spine; illustrated with photographs and drawings; very good or better. Limited to 15 000 copies. In 1960, in the thick of the Cold War, Squaw Valley and the VIII Olympic Winter Games were grounds to several sports' firsts - the first athletes' village was build, women's speed skating and biathlon made their first appearance as Olympic disciplines, the first and last time bobsled events were excluded from the Olympic program, and the first time exclusive broadcasting rights were sold to TV stations. Meanwhile, tensions between the States and the Soviet Union had been intensifying resulting in the US Government refusing to issue visas to athletes from the Communist countries. In retaliation, The International Olympic Committee threatened to revoke Squaw Valley's right to host the Olympics. The Russians dominated the games with the biggest medal count. Soviet speed skaters Evgenii Grushin and Lidiia Skoblikova were the only multiple gold medal winners. "In the Snow of Squaw Valley," written by two of the journalists in the Soviet delegation, does not merely cover the events during the Olympics, but it also describes the authors' observations of the customs and the reality of life in the US, the situation leading to the games, and the life stories of different athletes.
