Title: Svetloi Pamiati Velikoi Ermolovoi
Description: Moskva: Rossiiskogo Teatralnogo Obshestva, 1928. Soft cover. First edition; folded 7 ½†x 10 (pp. 4 printed recto and verso with last page containing only publisher’s imprint); portrait frontis; somewhat unevenly trimmed; small split at fold; minor spotting to last page; horizontal crease line through middle; good to very good. 1 of 3000 copies. An apparently unrecorded obituary published by the Russian Theatrical Society immediately after actress Mariia Nikolaevna Ermolova’s death. The daughter of a Moscow playwright, she began her career as a ballet dancer. Later, encouraged by her father she graduated from drama school and was accepted into the troupe of the Maly Theatre. Her fame was slow to come, but in 1871 she became an overnight sensation with her role as Joan of Arc in Schiller's version of The Maid of Orleans. Her success continued with many leading roles in plays by Aleksandr Ostrovskii – one of Russia’s most beloved dramatists. Mariia Ermolova was the first person to be proclaimed Soviet "People's Artist of the Republic" in 1921. The current commemorative print contains a beautiful eulogy in Ermolova’s memory and honor. Ill.: 0. 3.
