Illustrated With 61 folding, numbered, copper-engraved anatomical plates (by Van Bleyswyck, Creite, La Cave a.o.) outside of text, engraved portrait of Gaspard de Saunier by D. Coster, engraved title-vignette, engr. text-vignette with the arm-coats of the 8 "Curateurs" of the Leyden University and several woodcut-vignettes. Title printed in red and black. Gaspard de Saunier [1663 - 1748] dedicated this work to his father Jean de Saunier, a great French horseman who died in the early 18th centuryand, like his son later, worked in the Royal Stables. The son, after an eventful live, came to live in Holland and founded the famous Equestrian Academy at Leiden. An English translation was published in 1743 as the 3d part of Cavendish’s "General System of Horsemanship". A German edition was published in 1767. A complete, wide-margined, copy of this sumptuous work in very good condition, although with some staining of paste-ons, title-page and right upper corner of last 8 leaves.
