Amsterdam by Marcus Doornick, 1676. First Editions of the finest Dutch horticultural books, with numerous botanical engravings reminiscent of De Passe. Ad I: Dedicated to William of Orange, with a fine plan of the layout of Soest Dyck, the Prince’s estate at Utrecht. Cause also provides a contemporary view of Vranckryck’s garden at St. Germain-en-Laye, the French royal residence which was later redesigned by Le Nôtre. The cultivation of 420 plants is described, of which Cause illustrates 52 of them, often with bees or butterflies hovering nearby. There are also 14 (of16) plates of parterres and labyrinths, comprising 32 geometric and ribbon designs. Ad II: Jan Commelin was director of the botanic gardens and professor of medicine at the University of Amsterdam.There are twenty fine plates of citrus fruit by Cornelis Kick, and another six (5) plates by De Vree of orangeries, and the large view of the "winter-Plaats". Foliol partly browned/waterstained; title page cut short and has a small repair in the right corner; 14 (of 16) garden plans and plate 5 'Winterplaats van d'heer Pieter de Wolf No2', are missing.
