Rijksmuseum Amsterdam III, p. 252; Springer, Bibl. Overzicht, p. 96; V.d. Steur, Harlemia Illustrata, pp. 55-56; Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (2 copies); NCC & Picarta (5 copies, incl. at least 1 incompl.); not in OCLC WorldCat; for the artist and printers see Scheen, pp. 19, 325; Lithografie in Nederland, p. 17.The first printing of all but the last four parts of a classic set of fine lithographic views in the city of Haarlem and especially the surrounding countryside, including Velsen, Bloemendaal, Heemstede, Bennebroek and other regions. 'The last great print series on the regions around Haarlem' (Van der Steur) is devoted primarily to the stately houses, with their parks, gardens, horses and carriages, boats on the canals, etc. All were beautifully and subtly drawn in situ by Lutgers (1808-1874) and expertly printed by Desguerrois in Amsterdam and Backer in Utrecht. The former, whose move from Brussels to Amsterdam in 1827/28 signalled the great breakthrough in the quality of Dutch lithography, produced about half. Van der Steur notes that the quality is superior to that in Lutger's later series for regions around Utrecht. The book was available by subscription only and was probably printed in a small edition, so that it is now extremely rare in any form, and especially with one of the original wrapper-titles. We have located only 8 other copies. Each lithograph is printed on very fine 'Chinese' paper and mounted on the heavier leaves to form a book, whereas some of the prints were later printed directly on heavy paper. The book was issued in 19 parts from 1837 to 1844.A very good copy, with occasional minor foxing, mostly in the margins. The binding also very good. One of the high points in the history of Dutch lithography.
