Bob's life and work by the shores of Lake Windermere, first as an instructor at Brathay Hall Centre and on the staff of Wray Castle Merchant Navy Training School where he was outdoor activities instructor. With a partner he opened the first Royal Yachting Association approved sailing school on Windermere at Calgarth Hall and later on he was the Chief Instructor at the Storrs Hall sailing school. In the winter he conducted courses at the Charlotte Mason College which enabled teachers to gain the British Mountaineering Council's Mountain Leadership Certificate before they were allowed to take school parties on the mountains.
