Title: The Drawings.
Description: Hatje Cantz, 2008. 43 cm. 267 pp. Illustrations in colour. Green publisher's cloth. Text in german, french and english. ISBN-13: 9783775721417 ¶ For its 100th anniversary, the Deutsche Verein für Kunstwissenschaft is publishing all of Grünewald's known drawings in an opulent volume of facsimiles. The master's forty surviving studies are some of the most important treasures of German Renaissance art. Max J. Friedländer, discoverer of the most significant collection of drawings to date from the hand of the master, recognized Grünewald's outstanding technique as an equal antipode to Albrecht Dürer's prints. In this large volume Grünewald's print works are presented in carefully produced color plates, in their original size, with critical commentary. This publication is in the scientific tradition established by earlier editions of drawings published by the Deutscher Verein für Kunstwissenschaft, which first began this tradition in 1927 with the first complete edition of Grünewald's known drawings at the time, which has long been out of print. Later editions of drawings featured the work of artists such as Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Schäufelein, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. Exhibition schedule: Berliner Kupferstichkabinett March 14-June 1, 2008
