Title: Théo Van Rysselberghe
Description: Tielt, Bozar Books by Mercatorfonds, 2006. 263 pages, ill. in colour, hard cover and dust jacket. New copy. Text in English. ¶ This catalogue is published for the retrospective exhibition Théo Van Rysselberghe, which was presented at the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels and at the Gemeentemuseum The Hague. The key figure of Belgian neo-Impressionism, Théo Van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) has a considerable reputation outside his own country. The exhibition devoted to him is the latest in a series of major historical retrospectives situating artists in the context of their times. Van Rysselberghe had ties with the outstanding Belgian and French painters of his day and painted a number of portraits of friends such as Emile Verhaeren, Edmond Picard, Camille Lemonnier, André Gide, Paul Signac, and Henri-Edmond Cross. Celebrated masterpieces by Van Rysselberghe will be displayed alongside unknown canvasses and works on paper, along with a number of photographs and letters. Through his art, the painter entered into a dialogue with his contemporaries, including Seurat, Signac, Cross, Van de Velde, Morren, Lemmen, and Finch. A number of styles can be observed in the exhibition: orientalism (his first travels in Morocco), Impressionism (seascapes painted near Knokke, scenes from Moroccan life), neo-Impressionism, portraits, and his late works (seascapes, landscapes, and female nudes).
