Dr Yupin Chung - The Burrell at Kelvingrove. Collecting Chinese Treasures

Title: The Burrell at Kelvingrove. Collecting Chinese Treasures
Description: Glasgow. Glasgow Museums Collection. 2019. First edition. Octavo. Softcover. New. 40 Pages, illustrated in colour. A lovely catalogue to accompany the exhibition held from September 14th to spring 2020 in Glasgow. The catalogue shows a selection of highlights of Chinese bronzes, jade, pottery and porcelains from a total of 1800 objects in the collection. Sir William Burrell (1861 - 1958) was an omnivorous art collector and a wealthy ship owner whose vessels regularly traded in the Far East although Burrell never travelled to China himself. After he sold his successful business, he decided to devote his life to art, a passion that started at the age of 15 when he bought his first picture. His interest in Chinese art was most likely sparked by the 1910 Burlington Fine Arts Club Exhibition. He bought from famous dealers such as Sparks, Bluett, Spink, Partidge, Nott, Dickinson and Moss, ammassing a a fine collection with pieces from the Leonard Gow, Garland and Richard Bennett collections. From 1911 onwards he kept a record of his purchases. In 1944 Burrell and his wife presented the diverse art collection to the city of Glasgow and continued adding to it for the rest of his life.
