The story of an exceptional talent and the "rightness of styles for American life". ‘A designer should serve a woman not enslave her.' Adrian began his career in costume design. At MGM he handled both period wardrobes and elegant modern fashions. Many of his film designs were adapted for retail. He was married to the film star Janet Gaynor and his maternity smock designed for her was widely copied. His costume sketches were often published in Vogue. The 'Adrian' look was trim jackets and slinky crepe dresses, padded shoulders with details emphasizing the shoulder and triangular line and a pencil skirt. On sleeves he often changed details on one and not the other. He used stripes, trompe-l'oeil effects, contrasting fabrics and colors, beading, ethnic Spanish and Persian motifs, animals, Gothic themes, and everything with his own unique style. He created wardrobes for: Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Greer Garson, Katherine Hepburn, Jeanette MacDonald, Loretta Young, Myrna Loy, Luise Rainer, Hedy Lamar, and Lana Turner. Greta Garbo's and Joan Crawford's fashions were sold cross country This booklet is a reprint of an article from "The Californian" May Issue, 1950. Includes high definition photographs from this clearly fabulous designer. Wonderful. A must have for the fashion designer.
