A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Charles Hoffbauer studied French academic procedures for painting grand-scale themes of historical importance. In preparing the Memorial Military Murals he used a full range of those techniques. He invented the scenes of his murals and then used clay and wood models and small ink and watercolor sketches. These evolved into large scale crayon and pastel drawings from which he developed his murals. Perhaps the most famous of his work is he Four Seasons of the Confederacy Murals.
