Title: The Works Of John Woolman. In Two Parts.
Description: London: printed for and sold by T. Letchworth, at No. 33, Tooley-Street, Southwark, 1775. 8vo., pp.xvi, 319, [I]. Each part has its own title-page, continuous register. Slightly foxed, occasional pencil marks to margins, toning to title-page edges, small loss from top corner leaf K6 affecting the last letter of about 3 lines of text each side but not affecting sense. Contemporary brown sprinkled calf, red label to spine. Spine very worn and chipped with loss to endcaps, upper board loosening, corners frayed, without ffep. Still a good copy. Bright blue bookplate of James N. Richardson, of Lissue, Lisburn to front paste-down. First published in Philadelphia the previous year, this is the first English edition of the works of John Woolman (1720-1772), American Quaker preacher and early abolitionist during the colonial era. Woolman advocated against slavery and the slave trade, and also economic injustice, conscription, and cruelty to animals. Included here are: 'A Journal of the Life, Gospel Labours and Christian Experiences […]'; 'Considerations on Pure Wisdom and Human Policy: on Labour, on Schools, and the Right Use of the Lord's Outward Gifts'; 'Considerations on the True Harmony of Mankind'; 'Remarks on Sundry Subjects'; 'An Epistle to the Quarterly and Monthly Meetings of Friends'. Woolman died in York during a visit to England in 1772, and this volume opens with 'The Testimony of Friends in Yorkshire'. James Nicholson Richardson (1846-1921) was an Irish Liberal politician and a member of the Religious Society of Friends. He was MP for Armagh from 1880 to 1885.
