Occasional light yellowing, first and last few leaves slightly foxed. Original publisher's cloth, richly gilt. Dedication to Miss Charrington Wood by R. Thomson dated 1909 to fly. The first illustrated edition of this novel on a journey in Ireland of the fictional Penelope, with wood-engravings by C.E. Brock. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), a pioneering American educator and author of numerous children's novels. The Mrs Charrington Wood to whom this copy was donated is probably the same portrayed much later, in a photograph of 1951, protesting in London with other ladies against poor quality coal.
