Description: London, James Black and Son. 1817, First Edition. Half-Leather, 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book, xix, 431; xii, 398 pages; frontispiece in each volume, map, chart, 2 one folding plate with coastal views, one other plate. Rebacked retaining most of the old and worn spines, new endpapers, 4 old institutional stamps. John Nicholas, a New South Wales settler, accompanied Marsden on his historic mission to the Bay of Islands in December 1814 to set up the first mission station in New Zealand. Nicholas was his close companion for the duration of their stay. His account of Maori culture is of the greatest value. Nicholas' narrative is a useful parallel to the record kept by Samuel Marsden. Good.
