Description: Amsterdam, 1705. No Binding, 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Book, Engraving from Nicolaas Witsen "Noord en Oost Tartarije" Amsterdam 1705. 32.5cm x 21 cm, the images are 12 x 14cm. The first printed illustration of Nomuka, an island in the Ha'apai group in Tonga. Also an illustration from New Guinea showing 3 man in an outrigger canoe. One standing man is shark calling by blowing into a large shell. The illustrations are from Abel Tasman's visit in February and March 1643. These illustrations predate the better known illustration in Francois Valentijn's Oud en Nieuw Oost Indie from 1726. Good.
