Description: Amsterdam, 1705. No Binding, 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Book, Engraving from Nicolaas Witsen "Noord en Oost Tartarije" Amsterdam 1705. 32.5cm x 21 cm, the image is 24 x 14.5cm. The first printed illustration of Tongatapu, the main island in the Tongan group. The illustration is from Abel Tasman's visit in January 1643. It shows a large bay on the north western side of Tonga with several Tongan vessels in the water, a village on the right hand side and a group of 4 Tongans in the foreground. This illustration predates the better known illustration in Francois Valentijn's Oud en Nieuw Oost Indie from 1726. Good.
