It was original named the Australian Institute of Cartographers and changed its name in 1995 to The Mapping Sciences Institute. Its official journal "Cartography" was first produced in December 1954, the journal was issued biannually. The articles in the journal cover all aspects of cartography and map making, both from a historical perspective and looking to the future with articles on the latest techniques.
