There he was stung into action in 1794 by the visit of Joseph Priestley, the scientist and radical. Convinced that Priestley was a traitor, Cobbett wrote the pamphlet that launched his journalistic career. For the next six years he published 12 volumes of diatribes against American democracy, his style securing him many enemies and the nickname 'Peter Porcupine'.
