First published in 1854, a revised version of the 1881 edition. Original publisher's green cloth spine over printed greyish-green paper covered boards. Rear cover with advert for "J. M. Oat Jr & Co." Now protected by a custom-cut clear mylar wrapper. 124 pp. English - Hawaiian text presented side-by-side, in both phrases & words. NB. The printed leaf with pp [iii] - iv ["To the Reader"] bound in after p. 8, vice the title leaf. Contains forms for various business letters and legal documents (pp. 114 - 121). Contents page begins p. 122. 12mo. 6-5/8" x 4-1/4". General wear. Age-toning, and some offset to eps. Prior owner name stamp of Geo. R. Brush to t.p. First few gutters with darkened spots from the old stapling, the final two leaves at back have pulled away at the stapling. Rear board with vertical crack near rear joint. Withal, a VG copy. "To the Reader" prefatory material notes that the "..primary object of this Manual is to teach natives to converse in English. It is designed to help carry out the plan of the Government, to extend English schools among the indigenous race of these Islands. At the same time, the work is designed to assist strangers, speaking the English, to acquire the correct colloquial speech of the Hawaiians." Somewhat uncommon..
