Original navy blue cloth wrapped boards, stamped in sliver and black on upper board, ornamental design on backstrip stamped in silver, white moire endpapers, AEG. 74 unnumbered album leaves. 8-1/4" x 7". A Good to Good-plus copy, fraying around edges and corners, cloth on backstrip is partially removed, spine is split with many leaves loose, signatures and letters are clean and well-preserved. Penciled annotations from previous owner throughout. A friendship/autograph album that apparently belonged to a Ms Birchard, whose barque appears to have been a favorite among the contributors. Includes original ms poems, quotes, letters, and quips from many notable figures of the period. A truly singular item. The album feature 56 signed items including: an original poem by John Pierpont (1788 - 1886), a letter from George Stillman Hillard (1808 - 1879), a letter from George D. Prentice (1802 - 1870), a letter from George Francis Train (1829 - 1904), a poem and letter from Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894), a letter from John Bartholomew Gough (1817 - 1886), a letter from Robert Collyer (1837 - 1890), a letter from Daniel Webster (1782 - 1852), a brief note from Charles Sprague (1791 - 1875), a poetic bit of prose by Henry Wood (1869 - 1944), an inscription by Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936), a letter from Kate Field (1838 -1896) regarding Jane Eyre, a letter from Josiah G. Holland, a poem by Rob Morris (1818 - 1888), a letter from Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806 - 1867), a three stanza poem titled "The Birch" by Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814 - 1890), a letter from George William Curtis (1824 - 1892) and a letter from William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920). Signatures include George Bancroft (1800 - 1891), William Cullen Bryant (1874 - 1878), Rutherford B. Hayes (1822 - 1893), the members of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1890-1899, G. Stanley Hall (1846 - 1924), Henry W. Longfellow (1807 - 1882), James Whitcomb Riley (1849 - 1916), Mary Hallock Foote (1847 - 1938) and Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915) among others. There is also a letter slipped in from Better Homes in America dated November 5, 1926 signed by Herbert Hoover. A completed list of signatures is available upon request.
