Title: BLOTTER / TRADE CARD. "San Francisco"
Description: [San Francisco]: , (n. d.). White card printed in black and purple ink. Black and white photographic reproduction of the many sailboat masts in the port of San Francisco. 3-7/8" x 8-7/8". A VG card (light wear). "San Francisco, hardly a place of consequence until the discovery of gold in 1848, now boomed as the motley throng of pioneers passed through her 'Golden Gate' on their way to the mines. From a population of 10,000 in 1847 it rose to 100,000 by 1850.. A Pacific Mail steamer anchored alongside a man-of-war, in the harbor, which guarded the vessel to prevent the crew from deserting. Even soldiers deserted, 28 men of the Second Infantry decamped for the mines, only to be brought back by their pursuing officers.".
