From a population of 10,000 in 1847 it rose to 100,000 by 1850.. A Pacific Mail steamer anchored alongside a man-of-war, in the harbor, which guarded the vessel to prevent the crew from deserting. Even soldiers deserted, 28 men of the Second Infantry decamped for the mines, only to be brought back by their pursuing officers.".
